We went through
a strenuous process in order to be
certified as “Greenhouse
Friendly” by the Australian
Federal Government.
This required us to undertake a full
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which looks
at all the carbon emissions associated
from the point where the raw materials
are extracted from the earth, through
manufacturing of the product, transport,
its use and the disposition of residual
materials. The LCA was conducted by
a third party, Energy Corporate (Australia)
Pty Ltd, and adheres to ISO 14040
series of standards.
The report concluded that the total
C02 emissions on an annual basis was
207 tonnes. The reporting period is
from 1st May 2007 to 30th April 2008.
This gave us the tool to first look
at how reducing our carbon emissions
where possible. For example, we have
put in place measures to increase
our recycling and reduce landfill.
We’ve managed to reduce total
waste by 90% compared to one year
ago!
The next step was to offset our
emissions. This was done by purchasing
Greenhouse Friendly Certified Abatement
certificates. Our abatement certificates
fund a project by the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council . The project is a waste composting facility which diverts municipal waste from landfill and converts organic components to compost.
